A beautiful vintage 14 karat gold medallion necklace featuring a detailed Aztec calendar (Sun Stone) inspired design, symbolic of time cycles and cosmic balance. The medallion is paired with a high-quality vintage rope chain, finished with a 14K gold barrel (bayonet) clasp with safety tongue.
The Medallion
The circular medallion is executed in high relief, giving the design a sculptural, three-dimensional presence that rises above the surface. At its center is a solar figure, surrounded by concentric rings of glyph-like symbols arranged in a precise radial composition.
These layered symbols reference time, cosmic order, and cycles of creation, themes commonly represented in ancient cultures and frequently echoed in early coinage and ceremonial objects. The dimensional relief and softly worn surfaces give the piece an archaeological, artifact-like quality, reminiscent of historic gold coin and medallion forms.
Originally produced in high relief, the design now shows gentle smoothing consistent with age and normal wear.
The reverse is smooth and marked 14K.
The Chain
The necklace is fitted with a vintage rope chain, notable for its solid-link construction and dimensional twist. Unlike many modern rope chains, which are often hollow or tightly compressed to reduce gold weight, this chain has a rounded, looser spiral that allows each strand to remain visually distinct. It drapes fluidly, feels substantial in hand, and wears comfortably.
The chain is finished with a 14K gold barrel (bayonet) clasp with safety tongue, a traditional closure commonly found on higher-quality vintage chains. This clasp style requires more material and labor than standard lobster or spring ring clasps.
